Since its inception in 1985, the Japanese American National Museum has chronicled more than 130 years of Japanese American history—from the first Issei generation through the World War II incarceration to the present-day. In 1999, the National Museum established the Manabi and Sumi Hirasaki National Resource Center (HNRC) to ensure that the story of Japanese Americans remains accessible to everyone.

Located within the heart of the National Museum, the HNRC serves more than 8,000 researchers, writers, students, family historians, filmmakers, and other museum visitors annually both onsite and online through its reference, research and reproduction services.

Notice of Change in Hours & Services

Effective January 20, 2009, the Hirasaki National Resource Center (HNRC) will be open as a reading room only on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 AM to 3 PM due to the recent economic downturn.

The HNRC will continue to accept requests by e-mail to hnrc@janm.org, but will be limited to the following services* (current response time is 4–6 weeks):

  • Camp and Immigration records
  • Licensing still and moving images
  • Research focusing on the Japanese American experience

Requests to access the National Museum’s archival collection will be considered on a case-by-case basis and by special appointment only.  Reference assistance is not available on the weekends unless arranged by prior appointment two weeks in advance.
